Necco Candies

In 1847 Oliver Chase made the first candy wafers. He called them "hub wafers'' and the Union soldiers carried them in their packs during the Civil War. In 1901 Chase merged his candy company with two others to create the New England Confectionery Company which gives us the name "Necco."

American Through and Through

The Necco Candy Company, as it was sometimes called, continued to produce its sweet wafers for the US Army during World War II. The soldiers enjoyed the treats and continued to eat them when they returned home. This increased Necco candy's popularity and made it ubiquitous in homes across America.

Everything But Blue

The original rolls of Necco candies consisted of eight colors and flavors.

Brown - chocolate
Orange - orange
White - cinnamon
Pink - wintergreen
Purple - clove
Black - licorice
Green - lime
Yellow - lemon

In 2009 the lime wafer was dropped due to the restriction of artificial colors and flavors. Customers complained and the original lineup was restored in 2011.
