Easter Traditions 1: How Did Chocolate Bunnies Become Associated with Easter?

Easter is definitely on our list of top three favorite holidays, because candy is a big part of the Easter tradition. Of course, we believe that every day is better when you add candy, but have you ever stopped to think about why we give certain candies on certain holidays?

For example, why do we give out chocolate bunnies on Easter?

Connecting Chocolate Bunnies With Easter

At first glance, it doesn’t make much sense. Our modern celebration of Easter is based on the Christian holiday and as far as we know, no rabbits deliver sweet treats in the Bible. So what gives?

To find the answer, we have to go way back to the 13th century. Back then, somebody made the connection between bunnies and new life, since spring was the time when baby bunnies were abundant.

That morphed into the myth of the Easter bunny, a giant rabbit who lays, decorates and hides eggs for children. This adorable story made its way to North America in the minds of German immigrants. It quickly spread to become a beloved part of the Easter tradition.

Since every excuse is a good excuse for chocolate, candy makers started recognizing the Easter bunny with bunny shaped candies made of chocolate. And the eggs he delivered? Well, those became chocolate too.
