The History of Bubble Gum

Gum has been around in one form or another since nearly the beginning of human history. The Maya had a version of it, and so did ancient northern Europeans.

When was Bubble Gum Invented and Who Invented It?

The first gum sold commercially was created by John Curtis in the 1840’s. It was made from the resin of spruce trees. Over the years people invented artificial flavorings, chewier substances and new forms, like the Gumball.

Bubble gum was invented in 1906 by Frank Fleer. He wanted a way to stand out from his rival chewing gum manufacturers, and boy did he find it.

His first attempt was too sticky, which was called Blibber-Blubber, but Fleer didn’t give up. He set a team to work on it. In 1928, 22 years after Fleer first got the idea, an employee named Walter Diemer created a successful formula, which is famously called Dubble Bubble.
