Lollipop Plants

By far, the easiest and way to make a topiary is by using lollipops. Lollipops come in various sizes, designs, and flavors. A favorite is a lollipop plant made with bulk gourmet lollipops, again purchased from a bulk candy company.

To create this topiary you will need a small flower pot, a stem (stick or candy stick) styrofoam balls, a hot glue gun, play dough, and lollipops. You can decorate with ribbons, gummy candies, or M&Ms.

For a small topiary, place the styrofoam balls directly into the pot, and secure with a few drops of glue. Leaving the wrappers on the gourmet lollipops, begin pushing the sticks into the ball. The lollipops should cover the ball and be placed close together. Then the ball is covered in lollipops, you are finished. You can tie a ribbon around the pot and make several to arrange on the buffet table.

To make a larger topiary or a topiary with more than one styrofoam ball, you take the flower pot and fill it with play dough or quick dry clay. For a single stem, cut the stick about 5-inches long or use a candy stick that is roughly the same length. For a double ball candy plant, use a longer stick of about 10-inches and a 3-inch foam ball for the bottom base and a 2-inch foam ball for the upper base.

  • Fill the flower pot with clay or play dough
  • Push one end of the stick into the foam balls
  • Push the other end of the stick deeply into the clay
  • Leaving the wrappers on the lollipops, push the sticks of the lollipops into the foam balls
  • Place them close together and cover the entire balls
  • Cover the clay with plastic wrap or paper napkins
  • Fill the pot with gummy bears or other small candies (on top of the clay to look like candy soil)
  • Tie ribbons around the sticks

Using Candy Other Than Lollipops

Perhaps you want a more creative candy topiary. Use gummy bears, marshmallows, gumdrops, or any soft candy, to cover the styrofoam balls. These candies are unwrapped. Of course, you do not use hot glue for this variation. Instead, use Royal icing mixed thickly. You will need to stir it between applications.

Put some icing on the back of a spoon, and dip one end of the candy into the icing. You may have to spread it around a little. Place each piece of candy onto the topiary. Allow each piece to set before you apply another. Ask your bulk candy supplier to help you choose colorful candy that is light weight.
